Orthofix (Featured Project / Case Study)

Scope:

Redesign the bone growth stimulators product lines, for an advanced competitive advantage, comfort, simplicity, environmental factors and manufacturability.

Accomplishment:

TXS Industrial Design, Inc. was hired to revamp the Physio-Stim and Spinal-Stim products lines for Orthofix. TXS redesigned the bone growth stimulators to benefit patients and medical professionals, while streamlining the manufacturing process. The revolutionary designs drastically reduced overall part count from previous models, introduced a rechargeable battery and simplifying time-consuming assembly work.

By creating universal and interchangeable housings, existing plastic parts and PCB designs were reduced by approximately 45%. Introducing soft, flexible, compression molded wraps improved product comfort, while eliminating the majority of sewing operations and improved the assembly process. The redesigned Pysio-Stim and Spinal-Stim are environmentally friendly. Previous versions of the product consumed between 20 to 50 landfilling disposable 9v batteries. Incorporating a rechargeable battery reduced battery waste.

Innovation:

Patients benefit from the extensive use of lightweight compression molded polyethylene (foam) that conforms to the body. The use of lightweight, shape conforming materials are intended to reduce pressure on the patient’s wound and treatment area. The intuitive product interface is designed to be simple to operate and legible. Providing a simple two-button interface with a large easy to read LCD improves patient confidence that the product is working as prescribed. The straightforward two-button interface allows for one touch on / off activation with one button and with the second, the LCD display is illuminated.

Practitioners also benefit from the enhanced interface. Upon follow-up visits, practitioners can accesses product treatment records stored in the unit, ensuring patients both understand how to use the device and that the product is used as prescribed.

NRG

Rehabilitation and pain management is redefined. TXS assisted NRG in creating a family of pain management and rehabilitation products. The InterX product lines are designed specifically for pain and rehabilitation specialist. Interactive technology is combined with an OLED user interface to provide immediate access to treatment menus for acute and chronic conditions.

TXS’ industrial design savvy created two unique products lines and five treatment specific probes. The lightweight InterX 5002 and InterX 1000 are portable, battery powered devices designed for use in the field or office. Ergonomically crafted, each product allows right and left-handed users multiple gripping positions, while the InterX 5002 includes an electronically controlled OLED display rotation feature.
